Why the Internet Focused in on the Gabby Petito Disappearance

On September 21, a forensic examination confirmed human remains found in Wyoming were those of Gabby Petito. Gabby Petito was a 22-year-old young adult who was reported missing on September 11th, after embarking on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie. It was also ruled a homicide, though the cause of death has not yet been released. Authorities are continuing to search for Brian Laundrie, who is a person of interest. Laundrie’s family reports that they had not seen him since September 14th. It has been increasingly difficult to find Laundrie, as his family reported that he went to a nearby reserve.

The Internet’s Interest in Gabby Petito

Many people go missing every day, but not everybody becomes viral when going missing like Petito’s case. Many people, not just people who are usually involved in the scene of True Crime, have been increasingly interested in Petito’s missing person’s case. Many are curious as to why Petito’s case has captivated and interested those on the internet.

On both TikTok and Twitter, many people have continued to be fascinated with Gabby Petito’s disappearance and eventual death. Some on the Internet find it odd, explaining how Gabby is a real person with a family who is suffering, and that it feels as if people online are treating her like a true-crime documentary or show. They have also tried to solve the case themselves, though not a trained professional, and might cause confusion to actual investigators. However, one TikTok, in particular, is being credited with “solving” Petito’s disappearance

The TikToker @red.white.and.bethune posted a video of how they had found Petito’s van, which later led investigator’s to search the area where Petito’s remains were found. Many have accredited this video to solving the case, with comments such as “Your lead allowed Gabby to come home to her parents, how hard it must have been for her parents to not know where she was. Thank you.” However, some people were also treating the case as if it was something they were watching on television for entertainment, and not an actual person who was missing and later found dead. Some people made hurtful and tasteless comments about how they felt as if they were watching the newest Netflix documentary.
