Twitter Doesn’t Think Kendall Jenner’s New Tequila Taste Good

Reality TV star and model, Kendall Jenner revealed her latest project on Instagram this week. 818 is Jenner’s brand-new line of tequila that has been in the works for over three years. However, not everyone is a fan. While many celebrities celebrated her launch, others accused her of cultural appropriation. On Twitter, many users took shots at Jenner and encouraged others to instead support “family-owned Mexican tequila brands.”

One user, @estyledesma tweeted that Jenner was profiting off Mexican tradition and only visiting the most popular tourist places in Mexico.

Something about Kendall Jenner making tequila rubs me the wrong way..like the idea of white celebrities taking from local Mexican artisans and profiting off our traditions and agricultural business yet only visit Cabos and Puerto Vallarta for vacation spots…

Other users mentioned that Jenner should have chosen another alcohol like wine, due to her being from California.

Can we all agree to not buy Kendall Jenner‘s tequila? like wtf this bitch couldn’t stay in her lane and sell some wine

Some said that if she was going to produce and sell it, she should at least donate to the lower income communities that live in the 818 area code.

818 is the area code for the San Fernando Valley, which also covers Calabasas, the city in which Jenner grew up. Jenner has not yet commented on the backlash she has received, and many of her celebrity friends celebrated her announcements in the comments. Her famous sisters, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian were among the many well-known celebrities who congratulated her.

Another user pointed out the incorrect word choice for the 818 bottle.

I’m laughing that Kendall Jenner spent 4 years making her tequila and the words are placed wrong. Wtf is “blanco tequila” lol

Jenner is not the first celebrity to branch out into the tequila business. Other famous faces including Nick Jonas, Adam Levine, Dwanye Johnson and Justin Timberlake have also been receiving backlash for their own brands.

Kendall Jenner starting a tequila brand, with zero knowledge on Mexican culture and calling it “818 tequila” is GENTRIFICATION. The 818 does not claim Calabasas. What about those smaller, family owned Mexican tequila/mezcal brands? They deserve the hype & support.
