Trump DOUBLES DOWN on Racially Charged Tweets

President Trump defended a series of tweets aimed against four Congresswomen of color on Tuesday, claiming the women in question “hate our country.”

On Sunday, the President sent out three tweets aimed at Democratic Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, insinuating that none of the four had any room to speak about American issues given that they “came from” elsewhere.

The issue? Of the four, only Congresswoman Omar is an immigrant to the United States; Congresswoman Tlaib, Pressley, and Ocasio-Cortez were all born in the United States. This conflict between the President’s statement and, well, reality, has led many to denounce the tweets as based on racist assumptions.

Congresswomen Tlaib and Omar, both of Muslim faith, have been accused of antisemitism by Republicans for their condemnation of Israeli foreign policy. Congresswomen Ocasio-Cortez is frequently labeled as a radical socialist for her attempts to push climate change legislation often called the “Green New Deal.” Trump insists his opposition to them is purely political.

Hashtags like #RacistPresident and #RacistInChief have been revived and are trending on Twitter right now.

Multiple Democratic figures, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have spoken out in support of their colleagues. Pelosi on Tuesday faced a failed motion to strike her words from the record after she used the word “racist” to characterize the President.

Meanwhile, the President shot back against the Democrats’ attempts to formally condemn him, and continued his attack on the four freshmen congresswomen, tweeting:

…..Congresswomen, who I truly believe, based on their actions, hate our Country. Get a list of the HORRIBLE things they have said. Omar is polling at 8%, Cortez at 21%. Nancy Pelosi tried to push them away, but now they are forever wedded to the Democrat Party. See you in 2020!

The President’s defenders, mostly high-profile Republicans, are firing back as well, trying to re-deflect attention onto his targets. The top trending tweet on Tuesday was this thread by actor and Trump supporter Terrence K. Williams.

Kellyanne Conway, one of Trump’s most notable media correspondents, further responded to criticism on his behalf, saying “We all come from somewhere; I’m proud of my ethnicity” before asking reporter Andrew Feinberg what his ethnicity is.

Trump is currently sitting at around 53% disapproval, which isn’t a significant departure from his usual rating.
