TikToker Asked to Give Social Media Access for Job Interview

In a recent video circulating TikTok, a creator who goes by Nani went viral after sharing her odd experience in a job interview. The interviewer had informed her that they were unable to find her social media accounts and asked if she uses any type of social media. She informs them that she does have accounts, but prefers to keep her social media and work-life separate, and says it is “on purpose” that they could not find her. Although it is common for job recruiters to look people up on social media prior to interviews, she says that she has never been asked directly in a job interview regarding these accounts.

In the comments, many agreed that it is weird when jobs inquire about personal accounts, especially as jobs usually hope to keep work-life and personal life separate. One commenter on TikTok wrote “It’s so invasive! When applications ask for this info I stop filling it out bc there’s no reason they should have access to my whole life.” Oftentimes, job recruiters will search candidates’ social media to see the type of person who will represent their company, which is why people are often warned to be careful what they post online. Many, however, find this inappropriate as many believe that what you do on your off time is none of your employer’s business.

In a follow-up video, Nani said that the way they asked her felt “really bizarre” and goes on to explain that she works in marketing, and sees things on the “backend.” She says that she often can see a lot of information that some might not be aware of, like their IP numbers and the logistics of when they were looking at things and what they seemed most interested in. She says that she has learned from this industry that you can find someone’s “personal information.” So now, she has taken precautions in order to make sure this does not happen to her, along with keeping her invisible from job recruiters. Many found this interesting, even asking Nani for advice on how to keep themselves safe and how to have privacy on the internet.

In regards to her advice in protecting yourself and your online presence, she says that you can go online and block words from being commented on your TikTok and Instagram so that people cannot tag your college, work, or parents in order to “expose” you. Internet privacy and security is becoming incredibly more important, especially as jobs declining your application due to online presence are becoming even more prevalent.
