TikTok Influencer Khaby Lame is Now the Most Followed On the App

Yesterday, TikToker Khaby Lame became the most popular TikToker on the app, beating Charli D’Amelio, a teenager on the app who has a Hulu show following the family. He went viral for his deadpan comedy, where he often reacts to other TikToks showing overly complicated “life hacks.” Now, with over 142 million followers and over 2 billion likes altogether, it’s safe to say his comedic videos are well-loved by an online audience. Lame began posting on TikTok after losing his job in northern Italy where he continues to live. He lost his job during the pandemic, according to The New York Times.

Although Lame would speak in Italian in many of his posts, his comedic videos often rely on his facial reactions and do not use words to express his points. To NYT, he says “It’s my face and my expressions which make people laugh,” he says. TikTok is an interesting app as the algorithm often allows people to go viral randomly but then can use that to continue to cultivate and build an audience. But, building a large audience on the app can be difficult. Even more so, becoming the most popular creator on the app. But, the humor within his content is easy to understand, as he describes his facial expressions as a “global language” and appeals to everyone. It is not a niche type of content but can be loved by almost everyone on the app.

Many also enjoyed his brand as a silent comedian, with people joking that they had never heard him speak before, or wondered what his voice sounded like. Insider noted that Lame’s content is “in contrast to many of the videos from top creators like Rae and D’Amelio.” While D’Amelio and Rae’s content relies on hit dance videos, often participating in a viral dance trend that is popular on the app. ”

Although Lame started with making videos for fun, he now does this full-time as his job. Many are excited to see him grow and where his content will expand from here.
