The Internet Reacts to the 2023 Oscar Nominations and Snubs Across the Board

This morning, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the much anticipated nominations for the 2023 Oscars. Film buffs far and wide had mixed reactions to the news, and as always, some feel that certain actors and films were snubbed by the Academy. Others were happy to see Everything Everywhere All At Once continue to sweep awards season with historic wins for the Asian community.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" has 11 Oscar noms:

Some of the most notable snubs include Viola Davis’ role in The Woman King and Danielle Deadwyler’s role in Till. This year notably had very few Black nominees and Black led films across several categories, attracting criticism of the Academy.

No Black women at all for Best Actress

-No Viola

-No Danielle Deadwyler

No Best Directing nod for Ryan Coogler or Gina Prince-Bythewood either #Oscars2023

Despite the snubs, Angela Bassett’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever makes history. Bassett is the first Marvel actor to receive an Oscar nomination.

Indie film production company A24 produced a whopping 18 films that are to be recognized at this year’s awards.

Everything has led to this. Congratulations to our 18 Academy Award nominees including Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Whale, Aftersun, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Close, and Causeway! #Oscars2023 pic.twitter.com/F469dcv9fQ

Aftersun‘s Paul Mescal is another surprising nomination. The Irish actor made his TV debut on BBC’s adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People just three years ago. Mescal portrays a struggling single father on summer vacation with his young daughter.

Others pointed out how the horror genre continues to go unrecognized by the Academy, despite several critically acclaimed performances this year–notably, Mia Goth in Pearl and Daniel Kaluuya in Jordan Peele’s Nope.

I am so-so with the #Oscars2023 noms. For example, no NOPE anywhere in the categories?! I just want horror to be appreciated. pic.twitter.com/clFjlJuZHs

Some even compared Goth’s performance to Cathy Bates’ character in Stephen King’s Misery, for which she won an Oscar in 1991.

If Kathy Bates can win an Oscar for Misery, then Mia Goth should at the very least be nominated for Pearl! pic.twitter.com/6NnNeE63TF

Some fans of the nominated films and actors highlighted some of the most inspiring stories this year. Barry Keoghan, nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Banshees of Inisherin, had a long road to his nomination.

Brendan Fraser’s comeback to acting was ultimately successful, as Fraser is nominated for Best Actor for his role in A24’s The Whale. Fraser had paused his career after he alleged he was assaulted by the then President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Philip Berk.

Brendan Fraser is nominated for his first Academy Award for Best Actor.

Jamie Lee Curtis also received her first ever Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actress in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

So excited for Jamie Lee Curtis!! She was hilarious in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once.' In a surprising turn of events, the Best Actor category is comprised of all first time nominees this year.

Fun #Oscars Fact:

Not since 1935 (the 7th ever Academy Awards) have we had a Best Actor lineup comprised entirely of first-time nominees. Bare in mind that back then there was only 3 contenders.

Now we have 5 first-time-nominated leading men competing to win. #Oscars2023 pic.twitter.com/LKuy2JeWpT

Indie rock artist Mitski, who returned to the music industry in 2022 with her album Laurel Hell, is nominated for Best Original song. The song, “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once, is a collaboration with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and film composer Ryan Lott.

And of course, the internet had to make memes of the situation. Some expressed criticism through humor.

Brad Pitt has notably been involved in an ongoing controversy with ex wife Angelina Jolie, who alleges that he abused her and the one of their children on a private flight. Some critics felt he was snubbed by the Academy for his role in Babylon. Others felt it was a good move from the Academy to not reward an alleged abuser.
