‘The Idol’ Creators Called Out For Similarities in Selena Gomez and The Weeknd Relationship
HBO’s latest series ‘The Idol has been called out by critics, and fans claim it has similarities with Selena Gomez and The Weeknd‘s relationship through main character Jocelyn.
When the series first premiered, many attributed the show to “torture porn” as deemed in the Rolling Stone article that sweeped headlines. But now, Gomez fans are pointing out the distinct similarities between the main character Jocelyn and Disney alum. Fans have gone as far as stating Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye is to blame.
Jocelyn And Gomez Are Child Actors
Fans have gone on to point out that Jocelyn and Gomez started out their careers early in life. Gomez was a hit childhood actress on “Wizards of Waverly Place” while Jocelyn in the series also stars on camera at a young age.
In an interview with Vanity Fair reporter, Talia tells Jocelyn she grew up watching her on TV, when Jocelyn responded with “That’s so sweet.” This prompted fans to when Gomez once told an interviewer “You’re so sweet” when bringing up her time on the Disney Channel show.
Jocelyn’s Relationship With Her Mother
Fans started making comparisons when it came to Gomez’ mother and Jocelyn’s deceased mother in the series. It is unclear on what Jocelyn’s relationship with her mother was, but many claim it conflicts with Mandy Teefey.
Selena’s mother has been outwardly honest on Selena Gomez and her decisions in life. The mom disapproved with dating Justin Bieber and even the working relationship with Woody Allen.
“No one can make Selena do anything she doesn’t want to,” Gomez’s mother wrote in a 2018 Instagram post. “No one controls her. She makes all her own decisions. No matter how hard you try to advise. It falls on deaf ears.”
The Topless Album Cover
In the series, viewers get a first hand look in episode one about Jocelyn fighting to post topless in her album cover. She stated “it’s my body” and insists with an intimacy coordinator on set.
Gomez also did her own topless cover in 2015 for the album “Revival” one that was interesting to many fans. Some argue that Selena was urged to be more sexual at this time as well.
Jocelyn Cancels Tour Due To Mental Illness
After the passing of her mother, Jocelyn cancels her tour and cites it due to mental health reasons. While in the hospital, her team worries about her having another “psychotic break” while another claims “she was just exhausted.”
Gomez also cancelled her last few stops of the 2016 “Revival” world tour due to her mental health and lupus diagnosis. The star checked in to a psychiatric facility shortly after.
Jocelyn’s Assistant Is Her Best Friend
Leia, played by actress Rachel Sennott, sticks by Jocelyn through thick and thin in the series. She is one of the only ones who looks out for the star in the series and the two have a makeup line in the works they collaborate on.
Fans pointed out how Theresa Mingus parallels this storyline. Instead of the makeup line, Mingus has a swimwear collection that Gomez models and promotes through photos on Instagram.
Jocelyn Records Moans For A Song
Gomez releases the track “Bad Liar” while in a relationship with Abel Tesfaye. Fans notice the singer moans some of the words of songs while dating the singer.
In “The Idol”, Tesfaye’s character also pushes Jocelyn to record real moans by getting intimate together in front of others.
