Sydney Sweeney Says She Cannot Afford Break From Acting

Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney, nominated for two Emmys this year, opened up about finances in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Despite receiving her breakout role in “Euphoria” and being a fan favorite actress recently, she says “They don’t pay actors like they used to, and with streamers, you no longer get residuals,” and opens an interesting conversation about income for celebrities and how the life might not be as glamorous as it looks from the outside.

Sydney Sweeney says she wouldn’t be able to afford a six-month break from acting:

“I don’t have income to cover that. I don’t have someone supporting me… They don’t pay actors like they used to, and with streamers, you no longer get residuals,”

Sweeney notes “If I wanted to take a six-month break, I don’t have the income to cover that,” explaining how she has “to give 5 percent to my lawyer, 10 percent to my agents, 3 percent or something like that to my business manager. I have to pay my publicist every month, and that’s more than my mortgage.” This conversation came in reference to wanting to have children as a young mom, but “I’m worried about how this industry puts stigmas on young women who have children and looks at them in a different light. I  was worried that, if I don’t work, there is no money and no support for kids I would have.”

“The established stars still get paid, but I have to give 5 percent to my lawyer, 10 percent to my agents, 3 percent or something like that to my business manager. I have to pay my publicist every month, and that’s more than my mortgage.”

Many people were surprised to hear this, especially after her incredibly successful season on “Euphoria,” but some believed it did make sense. Sweeney notes how difficult it can be to stay relevant as a younger star, like styling, hair, makeup, etc. There are also press tours that might not always be covered. Sweeney says she takes brand deals because she has to, and if all she did was act, she could not afford her life in L.A.

Since Sweeney is known as a pretty big actress, many were interested to see how streaming affected pay. Other people, however, were not as sympathetic. Last November, Sweeney bought a house for 3 million dollars, which many accredited to her large sum of expenses. With many people facing concerns with inflation and a looming recession, one person pointed out “I can’t really feel bad for her because being hollywood poor and real life poor are two different things.”
