Stevie Nicks Thanks Taylor Swift For Writing “You’re On Your Own Kid”

Acclaimed classic rock singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks (formerly of Fleetwood Mac) recently embarked on a national arena tour alongside fellow acclaimed artist Billy Joel. Last night, Nicks made a surprising thank you speech. Nicks thanked Taylor Swift for writing her track “You’re On Your Own Kid,” which appeared on her most recent “Midnights” album.

While Fleetwood Mac disbanded in 1990, reuniting for former President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993 and several other occasions throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Nicks is often still vocal about her experiences in one of the most famous rock bands in the world. Nicks initially joined the band alongside her then boyfriend, guitarist and co-lead singer Lindsey Buckingham. Nicks said that Swift’s song specifically resonated with her when she lost her bandmate and close friend of several decades, Christine McVie.

Swift and Nicks performed together at the Grammy Awards in 2010, singing a mashup of Swift’s “Today Is a Fairytale” and Nicks’ “Rhiannon.” The performance was met with largely negative reactions due to technical difficulties that caused Swift to fall flat sonically. Specifically, a music blogger named Bob Lefsetz wrote that “now everybody knows that Taylor Swift can’t sing.” The incident inspired a hit song on her following album, “Speak Now,” titled “Mean.” Since the performance, fans believe that Nicks and Swift have remained friends.

Nicks traditionally gifts young musicians with a gold crescent moon necklace as a sign of friendship, and Swift was spotted wearing the necklace multiple times in the years since the performance.

Swift’s “You’re On Your Own Kid” tells the story of the growing pains associated with entering young adulthood and leaving home, specifically in the spotlight. Nicks recalled often leaning on McVie for support, and still feels lost without her friend who experienced the height of Fleetwood Mac’s fame with her.

Stevie Nicks And Gen Z

The heartfelt thank you to Taylor Swift further cements the former Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter’s younger fanbase. Nicks’ timeless writing about relationship dynamics and interaction with new media and Gen Z continues to earn praise for the singer on social media.

Another video clip recently making the rounds on TikTok showed Nicks talking about how the “Twilight” franchise inspired her music. Nicks discussed the films on an episode of  “The Late Late Show With James Corden” in an episode alongside “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner.

Fleetwood Mac’s music and fashion style also recently saw a spike in popularity after it partially inspired the popular Amazon Prime book-to-television adaptation of “Daisy Jones & The Six.” The book’s author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, has discussed taking inspiration from the band’s 1997 reunion performance of “Silver Springs.”

Swift is yet to respond to Nicks’ comments on “You’re On Your Own Kid,” but fans suspect that Nicks will receive a friendship bracelet of her own soon.
