Why was season one of Squid Game so popular?

If you are unaware of the plot and storyline with Squid Game, here is a quick recap. Set in present-day South Korea, the show follows a struggling father Seong Gi-Hun as he competes with hundreds of other contestants, just as needy, in a sadistic game incorporating childhood games that end with death if you are to lose. One person can survive, who will then win $38 million dollars.  The show portrays critiques of capitalism mainly, but also seems to explore police relations, gender expectations, and a discussion of where morality exists when it comes to survival. Obviously a dark show, why did it become so popular, especially in the United States?

Squid Game was literally always a capitalist product created by capitalists, and distributed by capitalists. It is literally on Netflix.

One reason the show became so popular was word of mouth- with everyone talking about it on Twitter or TikTok, people wanted to be in on the discussion and understand. With many videos reaching millions of likes, the show seemed to spread like wildfire and many wanted to participate. Also, dystopian themes have seemed to be a common interest in recent years, with examples like The Hunger Games film series or The Handmaid’s Tale television series being so popular as well.

What to expect from Season 2

Although the first season ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, it can still operate as a standalone. Though the creator did announce the confirmation of a season 2, he does admit that it is still in the early stages. According to Variety, he says: “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” He follows this up to explain there is no concrete direction to where the show will lead, but he did confirm that the fan favorite Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae will return.

Though the next season is still in early works, with little to no answers as to what the show will continue as, many fans are buzzing and excited to see the show continue, as many were worried that the first season’s teaser would remain just that: a teaser. There is no date yet for when to expect season two, so for now, many fans are opting to rewatch season one and wait for more news.
