SNL Faces Backlash Over Sketch Poking Fun At The Try Guys Scandal

The Try Guys scandal saga seems to not be letting up much to the dismay of fans, internet users, and the Try Guys themselves. Saturday Night Live got into the (surprisingly topical) cheating scandal during its last episode. Try Guys fans watching the sketch were dismayed over the angle SNL chose to parody.

The sketch starts with Ego Nwodin as a CNN anchor reporting actually important international news with episode guest Brendon Gleeson as DC political reporter. Gleeson gets breaking news of the Try Guys’ (played by Bowen Yang, Mikey Day, and Andrew Dismukes) statement and interviews the dramatically devastated group.

“Was this affair non-consensual?” asks Nwodin’s anchor character.

“No, worse. He committed the heinous act of having a consensual kiss and not telling us, his friends!” passionately explains Mikey Day in Zach Kornfeld drag.

The joke is simple. How is this news? And more divisively—Why does Ned Fulmer’s cheating matter so much to his friends/coworkers and randoms on the internet?

After the episode aired, The Try Guys and employees of the channel posted their reactions.

Wow that was unexpected

Try Guys fans were not shy in sharing their thoughts on the parody. Fans were not happy seeing the situation making fun of the remaining guys over the transgressions of Fulmer. The statement video has been praised by not only fans but PR professionals on the handling of the situation.

I should not care this much but snl doing a try guys bit where they make fun of NOT Ned but the other three for holding him accountable for all his shit and being hurt by it is so nasty like pls tell me more abt how funny you think a man cheating on his wife with his employee is

Oof, rude awakening to SNL that the entire internet is on the Try Guy’s side. There were so many other ways they could have parodied this, but they went for making the victims the punchline while downplaying workplace harassment. That’s pretty tasteless comedy. https://t.co/wn6kzYbMQr

This Try Guy sketch on #SNL started funny. Then it got mean for no reason. Whoever wrote it definitely missed the whole "Ned nearly destroyed the entire company and risked getting them sued for sexual misconduct" angle.

Some fans recalled a previous Trypod(the weekly podcast hosted by The Try Guys) episode where Fulmer mentions being old Yale friends with some SNL writers.

I love that Ned Fulmer just HAD to name drop his SNL writer friend in a Try Guys podcast episode just to sound interesting and now we have this https://t.co/8bafILmagv

Fans were able to confirm Yale alum, Will Stephens, as one of the sketch writers through cast member Heidi Gardner’s Instagram story. While fans speculate that Fulmer may have used his SNL connections to generate a positive portrayal this week, neither party has confirmed that.

SNL’s sketch does have one silver lining. We all got to hear Brendan Gleeson say the words Food Babies on live television.
