Queen Elizabeth II Celebrates Her Reign at Platinum Jubilee

This weekend, Queen Elizabeth II and Britain celebrate her reign as queen at the Platinum Jubilee. In case you’re confused, a jubilee celebrates milestones from the British monarch starting at 25 years. The Platinum Jubilee marks 70 years and she is the first British ruler to have one, making history. This year’s Jubilee started with a military parade and the queen even made two rare appearances from the Buckingham Palace balcony. And although Queen Elizabeth II’s rule does not extend to the United States, many online watch the Jubilee from home in the U.S.

For example, even former President Obama posted a video to celebrate along with England. “Today, I’m joining those around the world in celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It is with gratitude for your leadership and the kindness you’ve shown me and my family that I say, may the light of your crown continue to reign supreme,” he commented. President Biden, along with First Lady Jill Biden also thanked Queen Elizabeth II by saying “On behalf of the United States, congratulations to Queen Elizabeth II on an unprecedented 70 years of service to the UK and Commonwealth and thank you for your friendship to the American people.

Not everyone, however, feels celebratory. According to Sky News, protestors were carried away by police for getting in the middle of the Trooping the Colour. The NY Times also reported on how some residents of England feel about the Jubilee. “I certainly don’t view her with any kind of admiration,” Graham Smith, who will be hosting an anti-monarchy conference, said in response to the celebration. Anti-monarchy and #abolishtheMonarchy also began to trend on Twitter.

Among the royal family who attended the Jubilee were Prince Charles, Prince William, and William’s oldest son Prince George. The Queen’s other children, Prince Edward and Princess Anne. Prince Andrew did not attend the Jubilee, as it was reported he tested positive for COVID-19. Along with Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan withdrew their royal responsibilities and moved to the U.S., so many were not surprised to see that they were not in attendance.
