Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Romance Novel for Netflix Met With Mixed Reviews

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle acquired the rights to “Meet Me at the Lake” by Carley Fortune. The book rights cost nearly $3 million dollars but the two will have this project coming to the big screen in the near future. 

According to reports, Markle has big plans for Hollywood, but does not want to act or direct. Choosing this new romantic novel, the couple is pointing their career elsewhere with Archewell productions. 

According to Deadline, the book’s plot points include “childhood trauma, including loosing a parent in a car crash.” Many are comparing this ironic situation to the tragic loss of Princess Diana. Other topics include “mental health challenges and postnatal depression. 

The story also takes place in Toronto where Markle’s TV show “Suits” was filmed, and also features a broken friendship. Some are comparing the former friends to Markle’s former friend Jessica Mulroney who she reportedly dumped to look better in the public eye. 

Some are calling the novel production choice an inability to consider a world beyond their own “lived experiences.”

The author confirmed the news with The Independent stating that she is over the moon for the production. 

The writer posted on Instagram, “I never thought I’d be making this announcement, but since I am, it feels fitting that I’m doing it from the cottage where it all began. I’m thrilled to confirm that I’m teaming up with Netflix and Archewell productions on the adaption of Meet Me at the Lake.”

The novel follows Will and Fern who connect in their thirties, also the same time the Duke and Duchess met as well.

She stated, “I’m so thrilled about working with Netflix and Archewell to bring Meet Me at the Lake to the screen. Will and Fern’s love story is dear to my heart, and I can’t imagine a more perfect partnership.”

Fortune also took to Instagram on Monday to celebrate the news smiling with her book, which was published by Penguin Random House in May. The group also published Harry’s memoir Spare in January, and imprint ‘Random House Books for Young Readers’ published Meghan’s book The Bench back in 2021.

A Netflix representative told People in June that they enjoy their partnership with the former royals and it seems they will continue to put out more projects alongside the streaming giant. 

A Netflix spokesperson stated to People Magazine, “We value our partnership with Archewell Productions. Harry & Meghan was Netflix’s biggest documentary debut ever, and we’ll continue to work together on a number of projects, including the upcoming documentary series Heart of Invictus.”
