MTV Movie & TV Awards Cancels Live Ceremony Amid Writers Strike
The MTV Movie & TV Awards will not be going live this year and will be replaced by pre-taped broadcast due the recent writers strike.
Executive producer Bruce Gillmer said in a statement, “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.”
The award show is set to debut on Sunday at 8/7c on MTV and partner channels. Leading up to the show, major talent dropped out from the lineup due to the impending writers strike. Most notably, Drew Barrymore who was set to host this year’s show, dropped out on Thursday.
The actress and talkshow host stated “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike.”
Striking writers also had plans to picket outside the live event in L.A. this Sunday.
There has been no official word from MTV on what the impending future of the show will look like due to the latest news.
