The Met Gala 2021 Announces Dates For A Two-Part Event With A Theme Inspired By The Pandemic
The biggest star-studded fashion event is making its return. The Met Gala, which is the annual opening party of the Costume Institute’s seasonal exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City, has set to make a comeback in the Fall. After being canceled last year due to the world wide pandemic, the event will take place in a two-part event for the first time ever, with a theme inspired by the pandemic.
The Date
In recent tradition, the Met Gala has always taken place on the first Monday of May. This year that is going to change. The ball will take place with two dual-dates. The first exhibition, A Lexicon Of Fashion, will be opened on September 18, 2021 and the second half will premiere on May 2, 2022 with the opening of An Anthology Of Fashion.
The Theme
The theme this year is set to focus around American Fashion. The inspiration for the upcoming theme was taken from the struggles and injustice that America has faced through the past year.
“I think that the emphasis on conscious creativity was really consolidated during the pandemic and the social justice movements,” Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute told Vogue. Bolton expresses how he has been impressed by American designers ability to focus around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity.
The Host
With celebrity hosts such as Harry Styles and Lady Gaga in previous years, curiosity arises on who will be the host of the returning event. As of right now nothing has yet been confirmed. Rumors are circulating that the first exhibition will be hosted by designer Tom Ford and poet Amanda Gorman, who struck major recognition after performing at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The Guests
The museum has not revealed details about the guest list of the upcoming events. It has been said that this year it will be more “intimate” and that the plans are “pending government guidelines.” The guest list is carefully approved by Vogue editor Anna Wintour and her team. In the past, the event has had a guestlist of 700 people.
