Lizzo Cries About Hate on Emotional Instagram Live

On Sunday, popular singer Lizzo began trending on Twitter after she went on Instagram live in tears to talk about the hate she often receives online. Recently, Lizzo released her newest music video for her song “Rumors” which features Cardi B. During the Instagram live, Lizzo explains that she feels that the hate she is receiving is because she is a plus-sized Black woman.

She explains that she does not normally care, as she is someone who is used to getting backlash or hate for things, but when she feels that she is working so hard, her tolerance for hate becomes lower and she becomes more sensitive. Many were surprised to see such an emotional reaction from Lizzo, as her music and her personality stands and represents confidence. However, it is an important reminder that celebrities are still human and still have off days or hard moments. In one TikTok, she responds to a video of someone explaining why it is “fatphobic” and “colorist” to refer to Lizzo as a “mammy,” which was part of the backlash Lizzo was receiving and claiming that she caters to white people.

She explains that this is why she opens the new song with “they don’t know I do it for the culture.” Lizzo further explains that the people referring to her as a “mammy”, which is a racist trope that appears in films or books such as Gone With the Wind is desexualized trope, while people also become angry with her when she appears to sexualize herself. She explains that it “cannot both be true” and that people are angry that she is happy or successful. Since the live, Lizzo has gone on Twitter to encourage her supporters to continue to love themselves despite the challenges. She says that “loving yourself in a world that don’t love you back takes an incredible amount of self-awareness.”
