Lewis Capaldi Takes Break From Touring After Struggling With Tourette’s At Glastonbury
Lewis Capaldi is taking a break from live performances following a Glastonbury performance that saw him having to pause multiple times as he managed Tourette syndrome symptoms.
In a statement posted to his social media on Tuesday, the “Someone You Loved” singer thanked his fans at his Saturday show who sang along with the star as he experienced a series of tics and repeated twitches.
On Instagram, the singer with nearly 7 Million followers stated what was going through his mind at Glastonbury and what is to come because of this.
He stated, “The fact that this probably won’t come as a surprise doesn’t make it easier to write, but I am very sorry to let you know I’m going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future.”
The singer also went on to add how incredibly fortunate he feels to be able to take a break from performing to address his condition after the Glastonbury festival.
Capaldi went on to add, “I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I’d hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out. But the truth is I’m still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”
And in the end, the singer says he will be back soon.
“I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve,” he said. “Playing for you every night is all I’ve ever dreamed of, so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I’ll be back as soon as I possibly can.”
Back in April of 2023, the singer addressed the “very real possibility” of having to step back from music after he experienced a few rough days with vertigo. He also mentioned that he was having a difficult time managing his Tourette’s anxiety and increasingly present feelings of imposter syndrome.
The incident was actually so bad he had to call Scotland’s national tele-health and tele-care system.
At the time he stated, “My tic is getting quite bad onstage now. I’m trying to get on top of that. If I can’t, I’m fucked.”
In addition, all of his conditions affected his ability to make music, including his latest album, which he said he could not wait to play live.
At the time he stated, “It’s only making music that does this to me,” he explained. “Otherwise, I can be fine for months at a time. So it’s a weird situation. Right now, the trade-off is worth it. But if it gets to a point where I’m doing irreparable damage to myself, I’ll quit. I hate hyperbole, but it is a very real possibility that I will have to pack music in.”
In the past, the singer noted that the pressures of performing were a trigger for his mental health.
The singer previously mentioned, “The pressure of the job is the problem. The mammoth tours of enormous venues. The expectations upon me,” he said. “That’s surely anxiety-inducing for anybody, never mind a huge hypochondriac like myself.”
Capaldi released his second album, Broken By Desire to Be Heavenly Sent back in May of 2023. The album debuted at number one with nearly 95,000 units sold, making it the fastest-selling album of the year. The album currently sits at number 16 in the UK albums charts.
However, after the Glastonbury performance, his album is set to rise numbers places on the charts as well as Capaldi’s 2019 debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent. Back in March, Capaldi released a documentary, “How I’m Feeling Now”, which revealed his struggles with writer’s block and even his health as he tried to write his latest album.
