#FreeKesha Trends Years Later as Kim Petras Comes Under Fire for Defending Her Work With Dr. Luke on Twitter

Free Kesha has made a comeback and it’s all thanks to Kim Petras because she stood up for Dr. Luke.

The hashtag “Free Kesha” is once again swarming the internet after popular trans singer Kim Petras defended working with the defamed producer.

This movement originally started back in 2014 when Kesha came forward and accused Dr. Luke, AKA Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald, of sexual and emotional abuse in 2014. But what was the inciting comment that brought this all back nearly eight years later?

The movement appeared to gain traction once again when German singer-songwriter Kim Petras defended her work with Dr. Luke in a series of now deleted tweets. In a post she stated “get talented or good at anything, then talk to me.”

In response, one person stated “stop defending Dr. Luke first then.” This comment is not one that has been unfamiliar to Kim. Throughout her career path she’s been called out for collaborating with the musician. But this time she responded saying “5000000 ppl work with him why ya’ll only coming at me. I have nothing to say or be ashamed of at all. Go away.”

Even PopBase tweeted about the news in which Kim responded with “r u kidding me.”

One person online pointed out just how many songs Petras has worked on with the defamed artist. In the tweet, the person mentioned there are nearly forty songs registered accrediting their collaboration.

Another stated how Kim worked with Larry Rudolph, one of the men who helped set up Britney Spears’ conservatorship

Seeing all of this trending online, Kesha tweeted a simple “Thank you” in response.

Thank you.

At just seventeen, Kesha moved from Nashville to work with Dr. Luke who runs Kemosabe Records under Sony Music. Her first album released in 2010, Kesha filed her lawsuit in 2014. The singer asked to be released from her contract with the record label and did not want to have to work with Dr. Luke ever again.

In 2016, Kesha was denied this request and received the support of celebrities like Kelly Clarkson, Lady GaGa, Taylor Swift, and Sam Smith. Which is strange to see Petras having a top performing single with Smith years later… but anyway.

Kesha later revealed in April of 2016 on Instagram with a caption of what seems to be that  she was asked to take back her allegations of rape and abuse by Dr Luke in order to be released from her contract. She shared “so. I got offered my freedom IF i were to lie. I would have to APOLOGIZE publicly and say that I never got raped. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS behind closed doors. I will not take back the TRUTH. I would rather let the truth ruin my career than lie for a monster ever again.”

Since all of this, Kesha has released her album Rainbow in 2017 and her fourth album, High Road, in 2020 under Luke’s record label as she still has to complete her contract obligations.

One person tweeted that other artists are even being held under contract obligations and many others commented about Luke’s abusive behavior and even Becky G slapped the producer with a lawsuit.

Reminder that Luke is also holding Becky G and Doja Cat in contracts and abusing his power over them as well.

Other women like Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Bebe Rexha, Bonnie McKee, and Avril have commented Luke’s abusive behavior. He is a serial woman abuser. #FreeKesha pic.twitter.com/VXwxXUbddj

As of now, people have been putting signs on the Sony Music headquarters stating “Free Kesha” and MuteDrLuke. And Kesha has stated that her album Cannibal does not count toward her album fulfillment with Sony. So instead of one album, she still has to put out two more with the label.

Kesha confirms that her album ‘Cannibal’ does not count towards her record deal with RCA.

This means she will be stuck in her contract with Dr Luke for 2 more albums, not 1 #FreeKesha #MuteDrLuke pic.twitter.com/Or96NfRQkL
