Kevin Hart Set To Host The Oscars

Just as the Oscars hosting job was dubbed the “least wanted job in Hollywood,” the academy has announced that actor and comedian Kevin Hart will be taking on the role for the first time in 2019. The 91st ceremony is just three months away and the Hollywood Reporter released an article today describing in detail why no one wants the gig. The article stated that since 2004, “the Academy has struggled to find the right anchor, and nobody has been willing to run the gantlet more than twice.” The last two years were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and before him, Ellen DeGeneres, Hugh Jackman, Chris Rock, and Jon Stewart all hosted the ceremony twice.

Who thought there'd come a time when no one wanted to host the Academy Awards?https://t.co/V3R15utLDf

What the hell do you mean "nobody"? I'm all over that fancy shit. "Did y'all know most scenes are made up of different shots and cut together in some room? It's crazy. Anyway, to present the figurine for best editing and whatnot, here's Meryl Streep and Sinbad." https://t.co/oYML4lyGAQ

Um hell-OH. I said I'd do it for $10 million. It's not my fault they didn't bite! https://t.co/XNZe1D0aDC

Despite the fact that it has been labeled an undesirable job, Hart couldn’t be more thrilled to be taking it on. In a statement on Instagram, he said: “For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s supposed to. I am so happy to say that the day has finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal of mine for a long time…To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable. I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now. I want to thank my family/friends/fans for supporting me & riding with me all this time…I will be sure to make this years Oscars a special one. I appreciate the @TheAcademy for the opportunity …now it’s time to ride to the occasion #Oscars.”

People on Twitter are sounding off about the choice:

I only accept Kevin Hart as Oscars host if The Rock does ventriloquism with him the entire show

I'm kinda intrigued by a Kevin Hart-hosted Oscars: 'Now it's time to rise to the occasion' https://t.co/bQ7aW4r4k9 pic.twitter.com/iDekB1DX7H

Kevin Hart hosting the Oscars? On one hand maybe it means less political talk, but on the other will probably make it even more insufferable.

With views of the show dropping from 43.74M in 2014 to 26.5M in 2018, the academy is likely trying to find a way to shake things up and gain the audience’s attention once again. Having an outrageously funny comedian who doesn’t hold back, like Kevin Hart, might be what they need to bring views back up and make the show exactly what it needs to be – entertaining.
