South Carolina Apartment Complex Faces Backlash For ‘Hacked’ Racist Instagram Post

Coastal Club Apartments, a student living apartment complex in South Carolina, is under fire for a photo posted to their Instagram account on Sunday of a sign that said “WE WANT WHITE TENANTS IN OUR WHITE COMMUNITY.”

Awareness was raised when a tenant of the apartments posted screenshots on Twitter of the now-deleted picture. Since then, the post has been seen and retweeted by thousands of people.

The account soon after deleted the picture and posted another photo that said “NO ROOM FOR RACISM” along with a statement about the situation.

“Early this morning we were made aware that our Instagram account had been surreptitiously taken over and consequently, a hateful post had been placed on our community feed. ”

Although the incident was allegedly caused by a hacker of the apartment complex’s account, the statement given is not enough for parents and residents of the community to feel settled.

Parents have taken action on social media to demand safety and precautions for their children after the hateful post. Comments flooded in on Facebook after the statement was shared on their official page. Points were also made about how the apartments have shown little to no inclusion for diversity in the past.

“As a parent of a resident there, I am appalled. the apology is standard…yet needed. Your social media pages usually only reflect your Caucasian residents; therefore, along with this apology I will expect to see more diversity and inclusion in the immediate near future when representing your property!!” one mother commented.

“I will no longer be attending your school. This is sad.” a future student said.

Coastal Carolina University has since responded to clarify any relation with the school and the off-campus housing. They took to Twitter to let students know that Coastal Club Apartments is privately owned and not a CCU property.  The school has indefinitely taken the complex off of their website as an off-campus housing option.

In response to the racist image that was posted on the Instagram account of Coastal Club Apartments:

The apartment complex is privately owned and not a CCU property. As of today, this property will be removed from https://t.co/Zvv75iJDId until further notice.

Currently there is no information on who posted the racist photo. Coastal Club Apartments has publicly stated that they fully intend to “pursue this individual to the fullest extent allowed by law, including the possibility of criminal and civil legal proceedings.”
