Gwyneth Paltrow’s Diet Habits Attract Criticism Across TikTok

Actress and entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow has long been an outspoken advocate of detoxes, diets, and the latest wellness trends. Now at 50 years old, after years of starring in films and television shows ranging from Emma to Glee, Paltrow has successfully built a luxury skincare line and wellness blog, Goop.

The lack of accessibility of the brand due to its high prices has remained a controversy since its foundation in 2008. Now, in the social media era, Paltrow finds herself in a different controversy–the newfound criticism of diet culture. Countless TikTok creators and models have criticized Paltrow over a recent interview with Dear Media’s podcast. In the interview, Paltrow describes the great lengths she goes to in order to detox her body, and her typical day-to-day diet. The clip has amassed nearly 80,000 likes, and countless critical comments.

One user named Aly (@aly_g_) commented “Almond mom final boss.” The term “almond mom” has become a popular term on TikTok, and is used to describe mothers who are typically part of Gen X and were raised on strict diet culture standards. Many young women have come forward on the platform to discuss how this phenomenon has impacted their own body image.

Other commenters agreed that bone broth, which Paltrow mentions as one of her favorite lunch meals, does not have enough nutrients to be a full meal on its own. In the interview, Paltrow also discusses her use of liquid IVs for vitamins and intermittent fasting. Some went as far as assuming that Paltrow has an eating disorder that has never been treated, as the steps she describes are not deemed medically necessary for someone with Paltrow’s lifestyle. Pediatrician Dr. Rubin (@rubin_allergy) broke down the medical perspective on the Paltrow interview.

Others felt that the interview offered misleading information on diet and wellness culture for young people, and for those struggling with eating disorders. Model Tess Holiday stitched the video with an explanation of why she felt it was so harmful, and how eating disorders can affect people of all sizes.

Holiday liked one commenters assessment of the topic, answering back that Paltrow’s lifestyle was “an ED disguised as wellness.” She criticized Paltrow for profiting off of consumers’ insecurities.

Another licensed dietician on TikTok named Andy (@andydoeshealthy) broke down what the contents of Paltrow’s favorite IV drip actually are. Phosphatidylcholine is commonly found in eggs and soybeans. She recommended that the ordinary consumer simply eat these foods, unless they are allergic to them.

On the several stitched videos offering varied commentary on the matter, many have come to the consensus that they suspect Paltrow is malnourished, which actually speeds up the aging process that her brand Goop aims to prevent. Gwyneth Paltrow and the Goop team are yet to address the mounting controversy.
