In case you need a refresher, news broke of Operation Varsity Blues ~the scandal that launched a thousand memes~ in March 2019. Federal investigators discovered that over 33 parents across the nation had been involved in bribery and influencing the admissions process at multiple prestigious American colleges. Being the most famous among the accused, Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman essentially became the poster children for the scandal. Pictures of them looking distraught in power suits while en route to court were making headlines literally every day.
Huffman was accused of paying someone to correct her daughter’s SAT answers, and she pleaded guilty in September 2019. She was sentenced to 14 days in federal prison but was granted an early release after 11 days. Must be nice!
Loughlin on the other hand was accused of bribery; paying the University of Southern California $500,000 to get her daughters (Olivia and Isabella) admitted as fake recruits for the rowing team. In the wake of the news, pictures of prominent influencer Olivia Jade pretending to work out on a rowing machine were released, sending the internet into a frenzy. Neither girl was permitted to return to USC.
Throughout the course of the past year, prosecutors repeatedly denied the couples’ request to have the charges against them dropped. If the case had gone to trial, they were facing up to 20 years in prison. The pair must’ve come to their senses because according to CNN, Loughlin and Mossimo chose to admit guilt prior to going to trial. Loughlin was sentenced to two months in prison, a $150,000 fine, and 100 hours of community service. Her husband faces five years, a $250,000 fine, and 250 hours of community service.
So, will Loughlin and Giannulli really do the time for their crime? Only time will tell. But, hopefully we’ll be able to say justice was served.
