Fall Out Boy Announces First Album in Five Years, “So Much (For) Stardust”

This morning, the popular pop punk band Fall Out Boy took to Twitter to announce their first album since 2018. So Much (For) Stardust is coming on March 24. The band shared the first single from the album, “Love From the Other Side,” and an accompanying music video.

The video features bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz dressed as a grandfather, telling the band’s origin story as a fairytale to his “granddaughter,” and launches into a performance of the new track. The video contains numerous humorous references to popular fairytales and 00’s emo culture.

After their recent performance at iHeart Radio’s ALTer EGO a few days ago, the band teased the easter eggs in the music video, and encouraged viewers to look out for them.

Fans were quick to catch the attention to detail in the music video, specifically a book shelf that held classic novel titles combined with the names of several pop punk and emo bands.

Others took to creating memes about the return of emo and pop punk “from the dead.” Paramore, another band known for their 00’s and 10’s hits like “Misery Business” and “Ain’t it Fun,” will release their first album in six years this February, This is Why.

Others pointed out the negative response that fellow pop punk band Panic! At the Disco’s latest album, Viva Las Vengeance, received, joking that it was so bad that Fall Out Boy returned to the studio.

The group initially rose to fame with their 2005 album From Under the Cork Tree, with several songs appearing in the hit teen drama One Tree Hill, where the band’s Pete Wentz made several cameos.

“Sugar, We’re Goin Down,” a hit single from the album, has now soundtracked more than 11,000 vies on TikTok, from nostalgic looks at y2k fashion to jokes about Patrick Stump’s “emo accent” while singing.

The band has a nostalgic tug for a lot of millennials and elder Gen Z, and fans inner teenagers are overwhelmed with excitement.

The emo style imagery present in the music video hints at the album’s overall style. Unlike Paramore, whose revival has taken more an alternative rock and indie pop tilt, and Panic! at the Disco’s Brendan Urie turning towards pop, Fall Out Boy is leaning into what gave way to their success in the first place.

Pop punk slowly began resurfacing following the releases of Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album SOUR and WILLOW’s lately I feel EVERYTHING in 2021. The new generation of fans could be coming from TikTok’s trending y2k fashion and humorous takes on emo culture. The  2003 film Freaky Friday, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, and Chad Michael Murray, has also made its rounds on the platform, with Lohan’s character’s band from the film now soundtracking y2k outfit recreations.

The return of Fall Out Boy cements a phenomenon that has been building in the music world for the past two years–that emo is back, and if their new album is a hit with fans, it may be here to stay.
