Drew Barrymore Slams Tabloids For Claiming She Wished Her Mother Was Dead
Actress turned television host Drew Barrymore is critiquing tabloids for twisting her words. Barrymore has long been outspoken about her mental health journey and her complicated relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore.
In a viral TikTok video, the multi-hyphenate and mother of two recalled “dealing with the tabloids” since she was a kid. She slammed Page Six and several other publications for spreading misinformation and allegedly sensationalized content.
A Page Six headline read that the actress said that she “cannot wait” for her mother to die. The headline was ripped from the greater context of the quote. Barrymore went on to explain in the New York Magazine profile that she would never wish her mother harm, but that growing “in spite of her” was a challenge.
The television host was further quoted saying, “All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not. And I’m like, Well, I don’t have that luxury. But I cannot wait. I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow. I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy. But I have to f*cking grow in spite of her being on this planet.”
The actress elaborated, “I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel good,” she says. “I do care. I’ll never not care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up.”
Barrymore’s History
Barrymore struggled with addiction at a young age, first checking into a rehabilitation center at the age of 12. After years of a deeply personal healing journey, the host now helps her talk show guests towards their own healing on the highly acclaimed “The Drew Barrymore Show.” The show has often been likened to a therapy session, with the host praised for her understanding approach towards each of her guests.
Fans of the actress were quick to come to her defense. Some expressed that she has the grounds to sue several of the publications for defamation.
