Daniel Radcliffe Partners With The Trevor Project To Raise Awareness About the Transgender Community

Actor Daniel Radcliffe first teamed up with the Trevor Project in 2020, when he penned an essay defending transgender people in response to author J.K. Rowling’s controversial “TERF Wars” essay. Rowling famously penned the popular “Harry Potter” book series turned film franchise, in which Radcliffe starred as the titular character. Now, Radcliffe is teaming up with the organization again, on a video series called “Sharing Space”, which aims to raise awareness of the contemporary issues facing the transgender community, and address the misinformation on gender identity.

Radcliffe’s appearance in the Trevor Project’s video series has already reached upwards of 280,000 views. The series seeks to educate cisgendered people on the transgender community, with Radcliffe speaking to trans youth about their experiences. Comments from parents of trans children and former “Harry Potter” fans have written messages of support for the series on TikTok.

One TikTok user named Justin Williams (@justinbwilliams_) wrote “Daniel Radcliffe showing up for the Trevor Project is my favorite thing in a while. I’d urge everyone to check out this whole video on YT!” Another wrote, “Daniel Radcliffe is why I still love Harry Potter.”

In 2020, Rowling attracted criticism over her views on transgender people, particularly women. Rowling wrote that she was concerned with “the huge explosion in young women wishing to transition and also about the increasing numbers who seem to be detransitioning (returning to their original sex), because they regret taking steps that have, in some cases, altered their bodies irrevocably, and taken away their fertility.” “Harry Potter” cast members and the LGBTQ+ community alike continue to criticize Rowling’s commentary on trans women.

The Trevor Project works to prevent suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. Radcliffe contributes to  their lengthy list of celebrity donors and ambassadors. Most recently, transgender TikTok creator Dylan Mulvaney teamed up with the organization for a benefit concert, which streamed live from New York City.

Radcliffe’s continued support for the LGBTQ+ community comes at a time of sweeping anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the U.S. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee passed a bill that criminalizes gender affirming healthcare for minors. Iowa and Indiana have similarly followed suit. Additionally, a bill banning drag performances in the state was passed and temporarily blocked by a federal judge.  Meanwhile, in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is working to advance the Don’t Say Gay Bill, which limits LGBTQ+ education at the elementary level.

Additionally, a clip of Radcliffe explaining his role in the video series was shared on Twitter (@TrevorProject). In the brief clip, Radcliffe explains that he hopes the video can offer advice on how to be the best ally possible for the trans community.

It is unclear if Radcliffe will moderate the entire video series, or if other celebrity ambassadors from the organization will also make appearances. The full first episode for “Sharing Space” is now available for viewing on YouTube.
