Billie Eilish Claps Back at Body-Shamers During Vanity Fair Interview

Billie Eilish has clapped back at haters after a photo of her wearing a tank-top went viral for all of the wrong reasons. 

During her time-capsule interview with Vanity Fair, the “Bad Guy” singer opened up about the critical body-shaming comments she has received online. 

“There’s this picture of me, like, running from my car to my brother’s front door on like, a 110-degree day, in a tank top. Everyone’s like, ‘Damn, Billie got fat!’ And I’m like, ‘Nope, this is just how I look! You’ve just never seen it before!'” Eilish explained. 

This is her fourth annual interview with Vanity Fair. During the interview, the platform asks her the same questions as the year before and then compares her responses. 

Fans have continued to praise Eilish on social media for being happy and confident with her body. However, many critics and internet trolls have made rude and judgmental comments about these images that recently surfaced. 

The 18-year-old singer is notorious for wearing large and baggy clothing in order to avoid this type of attention. Some people have mixed opinions about Eilish making this decision early on in her career. 

In a 2019 interview with Calvin Klein, Eilish opened up about her decisions and how the general public has reacted to them. “I never want the world to know everything about me. I mean, that’s why I wear big baggy clothes: Nobody can have an opinion, because they haven’t seen what’s underneath, you know? Nobody can be like ‘Oh, she’s slim-thick, she’s not slim-thick, she’s got a flat ass, she’s got a fat ass. No one can say any of that because they don’t know,” Eilish explained. 

When it comes to body image and body positivity, Eilish hopes that she can continue to inspire and empower younger generations.

“I think yeah, the reason people are looking up to you is because you’re you, they’re not looking up to you so that you’ll tell them something that you never actually tell them. They’re looking up to you so that you tell them something that you would tell them yourself,” She said. “I love having kids relate to me and tell me that I make them feel comfortable in their bodies. If I can do anything, I wanna do that.”

It’s apparent that the young superstar feels most comfortable and confident when she is around those who love her, especially her fans. During one of her concerts in March this year, she wore a bra on stage instead of keeping herself covered up. 

During her latest tour before the coronavirus, she addressed body-shamers in a visual. The singer used the opportunity to chat about double standards, body positivity and confidence. 

“The body I was born with, is it not what you wanted? If what I wear is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I am a slut.”

The interview with Vanity Fair also reveals that Billie Eilish is currently experiencing a bit of an identity crisis. She thinks about a performance in 2019 as well as other appearances and explains,  “I think it was December. I did some radio show performance, and the entire show I felt like I was pretending to be Billie Eilish. I completely wasn’t looking at myself as myself. I was just totally seeing it from not my own perspective and it was so weird. It happened multiple times at award shows and stuff — I felt like a parody of myself.”

Fans are happy to hear that Eilish is working on a new album, which she does not plan to release until the “timing is right.”

Billie is also nominated for several Grammys in 2021 alongside artists such as Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift.
