Armored Truck Spills Money on the San Diego Freeway while Viral Video Shows Drivers Stop to Scoop it Up

In a viral video posted on both Reddit and Twitter, an armored truck spilled money onto the freeway, causing many to pull over in a chance to take some of the money.

Posted only a few days ago, the video shows a girl as she explains that this is the “craziest thing” that she has ever seen. She shows the money that is scattered across the ground, and how the freeway is completely stopped as people run around trying to grab as much cash as they can.

As the video continues, she shows how everyone stops and immediately tries to grab some money of their own.

Though some in the comments found it amusing, commenting how they were wasting time recording when they should be focused on grabbing money, others were concerned with the legality. On Reddit, one user asked “Do banks keep track of all serial numbers of the bills they were carrying? This happened in my city once and they said anyone caught spending the money would be charged.” There did not seem to be a clear answer on this, some saying that all serial numbers are tracked when depositing into a bank, but others wondered if they could escape this by only using it for groceries or other necessities without depositing.

Others were amazed that people would post themselves willingly, showing how unaware they were of future consequences. According to Fox News, two people have since been arrested in regards to the incident. The two adults, a man, and a woman were arrested after there was suspicion of them taking money and that their car blocked traffic after being locked out. Additionally, the news site notes that officials are aware of the social media videos of the incidents and can be used as evidence.

It’s a felony. So no, Christmas is about to be in jail for them.

Though some would consider this good luck, this is still considered stealing. California Highway Patrol Curtis Martin notes “If you found money on the freeway, it is not your money. It belongs to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and this armored truck and the bank. It needs to be returned” in a recent news conference.
