Amber Heard’s Lawyers Want the Defamation Trial Verdict Dropped

On Friday, Amber Heard’s lawyers asked for the defamation trial verdict to be dropped. As you might recall, Heard’s ex-husband Johnny Depp sued Heard for a Washington Post op-ed article where she claimed to be a victim of abuse. Although she did not name Depp, he claimed these claims tarnished his reputation and were untrue. In an incredibly high-volume case that plagued the internet for the entirety of its six weeks, the verdict decided that Heard did defame Depp.

Now, Heard’s lawyers filed a document to toss the jury’s verdict on all three counts, dismiss Depp’s complaint, and investigate claims concerning a juror assuming a false identity. According to Depp’s lawyers, who received large amounts of praise during the televised trial for the way they handled themselves, they expected this and was “longer, no more substantive.”

Of course, given the attention the trial received, Amber Heard began to trend online as people reacted to this. Heard’s lawyers claimed there was not enough evidence that Heard defamed Depp and the multi-million punishment for Heard was “excessive as a matter of law.” Many online vehemently disagree with this, believing that Heard defamed Depp and should be held accountable.

“By demanding the defamation verdict be overturned, Amber Heard is spitting in the face of one of the most important amendments of the US Constitution: the inestimable privilege of a trial by jury which is conceded by all to be essential to civil liberty,” one person online wrote. Still, some people believe Heard’s innocence and applaud her for trying to dismiss the jury’s verdict. One Twitter user created a Twitter thread dedicated to things she believes people overlook when it comes to the defamation trial, which went viral and circulated online.
