Folks, Logan Paul Has Found a Dead Body

So, 2018 is already off to a rough start. In a now deleted video, Logan Paul went into Aokigahara — Japan’s “suicide woods”, known for this because of the high volume of suicides that occur there, and found a corpse hanging from a tree. Now when most people would find a dead body they would treat it with the horror and respect that such a thing deserves. Anyway, Logan Paul filmed it.

The video — now thankfully taken down — was introduced with the words: “I think this definitely marks a moment in YouTube history because I’m pretty sure this has never hopefully happened to anyone on YouTube ever. Now with that said: Buckle the fuck up, because you’re never gonna see a video like this again!”

Can you imagine the ignobility of having not only your dead body featured in a video, but that someone finds your corpse and considers it a “moment in YouTube history”?! My God. Buckle the fuck up indeed.

The video, titled— maybe a little too appropriately — “We Found a Dead Body in Japan” — ranked up six million views and was quickly taken down following intense, intense, just the most intense criticism. Here is Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul for example, saying —

Ah, Aaron Paul called you trash plain and simple. That’s fun. Bojack Horseman star Aaron Paul… let’s see what Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner had to say!

Nice! As for the apology she’s referring to? Logan Paul took down his video around 7pm and posted an apology from his notes app which is… weird. The apology both brags about his massive amount of views, quotes Spider-Man and includes the sentence “I do this sh*t every day. I’ve made a 15 minute TV show EVERY SINGLE DAY for the past 460+ days. One may understand it’s easy to get caught up in the moment without fully weighing the possible ramifications”, to which I say — buddy. There should be ONE reaction to finding a corpse. A pure gut reaction. The kinds our bodies are wired with. Also, an excuse isn’t the same as an apology. Read the full statement below, it is really something.

Logan Paul then uploaded a much more sincere apology, apologizing for doing something so “heartless and cruel” and saying “he does not expect to be forgiven”.

As YouTube culture becomes more and more unwieldy — with PewDiePie paying people to say anti semitic things, Daddy of Five and others being arrested for child abuse and Logan Paul filming a corpse for his tween audience, many questions are to be asked about what it means for the future of the platform and what the end results of this kind of “anything for a view” behavior will ultimately end up. I don’t know. But here are some Twitter reactions, folks.

Some are very personal.

Some made fun of Paul in a nice way.

All of them hold the star accountable for failing his young fans. We didn’t even get into the fact that he wore a Toy Story beanie into the suicide woods. Damn. YouTube is already in the midst of a reckoning, and decisions like this will push it further into one.
