“33 Billion” is Trending on Twitter after President Biden Announces His Plans for Ukraine Shipments

Announced earlier today, President Joe Biden asks Congress for the approval of 33 billion more in support of Ukraine as emergency aid and shipments. This came as a surprise to many, as this was more than twice the amount that was approved in March, as that package was 13.6 billion dollars. Now, “33 billion” is trending online as people react to this news. The Ukraine-Russian war has been incredibly difficult for many to watch as the war progresses, and Biden says that the money would act as a defense for “defense, economic and humanitarian assistance as the country battles a Russian invasion” according to the New York Times.

Many see this as a remarkable message, as it depicts the efforts made by the US to prepare for more conflict. President Biden said that “The cost of failing to stand up to violent aggression in Europe has always been higher than the cost of standing firm against such attacks.” But, not everyone thinks this is a smart or helpful move from the president, with some people feeling particularly strongly about the issue. Jordan Schatchel, a journalist, wrote on Twitter that “Sending $33 billion to Ukraine amounts to an act of treason. Placing that debt on the American people for a foreign war 5,000 miles away should be perceived as criminal behavior.”

Others brought up the steep number and compared it to student loans, which many had hoped would be canceled when Biden became president. Some wondered why so much money was being sent for Ukraine relief when it could be used to cancel people’s debt.

Although many were upset with this, some are hopeful that the support being sent to Ukraine can help with the war, which many are afraid will continue outside of Ukraine’s borders. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to be a point of contention online, as it seems that no solution is favorable by all.
