SXSW: Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia and Justin Hartley Talk All Things “This Is Us”

  •  What’s Trending had the incredible honor of interviewing three cast members of NBC’s hit show “This Is Us.” Shira got to sit down with Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia and Justin Hartley to discuss all things “Us” and “Us” related events, at SXSW.  The group began by discussing the Season 2 finale, which Justin thinks is one of the top five episodes of the entire show so far. And, why is the show so good? Mandy Moore ascribes the quality to the program’s unique episode order — where two seasons got greenlit at once. The first season set up all of the characters so the audience would fall in love with them, and season 2 then gave us all of those beautiful moments of drama. Knowing they had those extra episodes to continue developing their ideas gave the writers the space to continue experimenting.  When Shira asked the cast which moment surprised them the most, the cast said that they’re rarely surprised by what happens on the show anymore. In fact, they’re in on all of the major decisions! The cast is united, however, by their love of the scripts. They even ascribed that to their famous “This Is Us” chemistry — uniting over the script of the pilot was the root of their bonding on the show.  Shira also asked the group about audience feedback, and how much it impacts their performance. According to Milo? Not at all. Milo said if you let the audience feedback impact the performance, you’re doing them a disservice. It sounds like Milo feels he has to keep surprising them, but, also according to Milo, some of the audience feedback is like: “Why did you run back for the dog?” which Milo quietly explains.  It’s an incredibly lively interview. The cast even agrees to write a yearbook quote for a high school senior! Make sure to watch it above, and leave a comment down below.  For more SXSW coverage, follow us on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
