SXSW: Alicia Malone and Erik Davis Talk the Future of Cinema

  • To say that 2017 has been a huge year for movies would be an understatement. Between Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Call Me By Your Name, and, of course, Get Out, movies are back in the public eye in a huge way, so who better to sit down and talk with us about what happened, and what’s to come in the world of cinema than Fandango editors Alicia Malone and Erik Davis. Shira joins them in a conversation at SXSW about movies to come, and movies that have been. For the Oscars, Erik said this: “any year where the two front-runners for best picture are a horror movie or a sci-fi fantasy directed by Guillermo del Toro, that’s a good year.” Alicia was excited about Frances McDormand’s mention of the inclusion rider, which Erik thinks is going to have an incredible impact on diversity in film — both behind and in front of the camera. But folks — enough of the past. This is SXSW after all. So what movies are our two film journalists looking forward to? Alicia is excited about a Bill Murray documentary playing around the festival — and is nervous about The Quiet Place, a John Krasinski directed, Emily Blunt starring horror film where anyone who makes a sound is attacked, and Erik is excited about Blockers, a Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg produced comedy about parents trying to stop their daughters from losing their virginities on prom night. One of the biggest pieces of news from the festival, however? The incredible amount of female-directed vehicles at play here with eight of the ten narrative films in competition this year directed by women! It’s a promising year for films, and we’re excited to talk to Alicia Malone (whose new book, “Backwards and in Heels: The Past, Present and Future” can be purchased here) and Erik Davis about it.
