What’s the Deal with the #SelfieKid from the Super Bowl?
The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 on Sunday for their first Super Bowl win ever! But you’re not here for boring sports stats read to you by some dude. No! You want to know about the most viral moment of the game. And that was most definitely the Selfie Kid. This kid’s just standing there, enjoying a performance of “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Trolls, when Justin Timberlake just stops right next to him. After the selfie, the kid seems a little confused about what to do and eventually he just starts clicking around on his phone while Justin Timberlake is still performing right there. This inspired a ton of memes about what he might have been looking at on his phone.
Personally I think he was busy reading the Pitchfork review of Timberlake’s new album Man of the Woods. 3.8. Ouch. The now world famous SelfieKid’s name is Ryan McKenna. Good Morning America was there and got a quick interview with Ryan in the 3rd quarter, and he’s what we know —He’s a 7th grader from Hingham, Massachusetts, which is only about 20 miles southeast of Boston. So, he’s a Patriots fan, but he didn’t seem too disappointed on a Good Morning America interview this morning. Apparently, Justin Timberlake is his favorite musical artist, which is pretty crazy. That would be like if I went to the Super Bowl, and like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits came in to the audience and performed next to me. At one point during halftime, Timberlake covered Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” while a projection of Prince played on a giant screen in the background. They also somehow managed to light up half of Minneapolis, Prince’s hometown, in purple, to honor the late singer. I would have loved to see Janet Jackson come out, and even have them perform some of her songs as well. It’s probably the NFL didn’t want to remind people of the controversy. But then why have Timberlake back in the first place? But what do you guys think about everything? SelfieKid, Timberlake, the fans, the game?
