Was Tom Brady’s Kiss With His Son Weird?

  • Ah, the loving bond that only exists between a father and son. Like this weird kiss between Tom Brady and his son. Wait, what the hell? Coinciding with this NFL record 8th trip to the Super Bowl, Tom Brady is starring in a Facebook documentary series Tom vs. Time, following the Patriots quarterback through his training and health regimen, but one moment from episode 3 is raising eyebrows — involving Tom Brady kissing his son on the lips. That kiss has started a debate online about how affectionate parents should be with their kids. Everyone has an opinion on this, and even child psychologists disagree about how this kind of affection impacts children. Last year, a similar controversy was started when Victoria Beckham Instagrammed this photo of her kissing her daughter on the lips. In response, the website FamilyShare compiled interviews with several child psychologists to see if this sort of thing is okay or if it could cause harm. Dr. Charlotte Resnick from UCLA says parents should avoid kissing their children on the lips. She says: “If you start to kiss your kids on the mouth when they are young, when do you stop? It’s extremely confusing.” She also says after the age of 5 or 6 that a kiss on the lips could be sexually stimulating, which you definitely don’t want if you’re a parent. But, Dr. Fiona Martin from the Sydney Child Psychology Centre disagrees. She says: “It is normal and healthy to show affection for your children. You are communicating to your children that you love them.” And as of now, there’s never been any study or documentation to show that kissing your children on the lips will cause them any psychological harm, and that kiss is just a few seconds of a full 90-minute documentary about Tom Brady. Controversy or not… this will probably help get more people to watch the series. What do you think of the kiss?
