New Cheater’s Version of Monopoly Basically Reflects How Screwed Up Corporations Are Today
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. I was not prepared for how much this annoyed me. Monopoly, the incredibly long game (originally created to satirize the 1% run amuck) is back to continue to remind you that folks that things are stupider than ever. Monopoly is releasing an edition of its game which rewards you for cheating, reflecting that no longer are the rules for capitalism even fair, but if you have enough you can cheat a little bit. You know, in the board game, in life, whatever. The game now comes with fifteen cheat cards which encourage players to do stuff like steal the deed to someone’s property (squatting), identity theft (moving someone’s piece for them) and “shortchanging” them — i.e., giving someone less money than you owe them and just seeing if they notice. What are you? A game, or my 2014-era copywriting employer? Talk about board games for adults. The economy is already made up of people who will very excitedly mess with you. What is the fun of this? If you’re caught, however, you go to jail, which is the only part of this game that is unrealistic. Monopoly is a wonderful game, and there’s also a Rick and Morty version of it, if you care at all about your blood pressure. Hasbro’s spokesman said — “A recent study conducted by Hasbro revealed that nearly half of game players attempt to cheat during Monopoly games, so in 2018, we decided it was time to give fans what they’ve been craving all along — a Monopoly game that actually encourages cheating,” which is another bummer of late capitalism! Just because people want something, doesn’t mean we should give it to them. This is the same system that gave us four live-action Alvin and Chipmunks movies, and nonstop Trump coverage. Oh, Monopoly. Why must you represent so much late capitalist badness? Well, that’s what I think of the board game. What do you think? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
