Nintendo Direct Announces New Mario Game, Something Called “Funky Kong Mode”

  •  The Nintendo Switch did something very special as of late — they brought gaming back into the mainstream. For a little bit, the art form threatened to become the specialist hobby of a very specific audience — so when the Nintendo Switch announces new games — PEOPLE LISTEN. There are a lot of special treats here. If you were a DS fan from a few years ago, the release of “The World Ends with You” is massive news. You know, for me at least who couldn’t afford it as a kid… here comes some “The World Ends with You!”

  •  Bigger news for Switch fans is of course exciting new ports and exciting new games. For example, Super Mario Odyssey is getting some downloadable content — nothing new in terms of game levels, but Mario will get some new clothes, including a suit of armor. That’s cool, right? And, a multiplayer mode where you hide balloons from people all over the world. Which is fine by me — if the creators of Mario Odyssey are creating new stages, put them in a Mario Odyssey sequel! I have 994 moons, and I’m not ready to return to the real world. Sequel, sequel, sequel!

  •  A big new game is Mario Tennis: Aces — a Mario tennis game with a story mode. If you guys liked Golf Story for the Switch, you know that game is based on the sudden boost in Mario Sports RPGs back in the day, so this will be exciting.

  •  But, most exciting? For me at least — the port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze featuring… FUNKY KONG MODE! The stupid, awful gorilla who surfs. And, the best part about it? You can make him a meme baby!
