Oprah’s Golden Globes Speech Gives People Presidential Hopes

  •  During Seth Meyers’ Golden Globes monologue he joked about Oprah and Tom Hanks running for president — a joke that many are dreaming about following Oprah Winfrey’s incredible speech at the Golden Globes during the which was one of the highlights of the night. The speech covered Oprah watching Sydney Poitier win the Academy Award for Best Actor, and later the Cecil B DeMille Award, and knowing that her winning the same — as the first black woman to do so — was an inspiration for so many kids watching her. The speech was beautiful and ended with a call to action — So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”  The speech was inspiring, but it also got many people to hope— could Oprah run in 2020? We’re in an odd political climate right now where celebrities with minimal political experience are thinking about running. The Rock and Mark Zuckerberg are both obviously thinking about it, and we’ve already gotten the worst celebrity of them all with Donald Trump, so in those circles, yes, obviously Oprah is the best of the four. Here are some reactions.

  •  Even NBC Tweeted out about it (before deleting it after being pressured by Republicans who have a hard time seeing any irony in that). However, a lot of people are also saying — please don’t talk about a president Oprah, that is just— no. Let’s have a president with, you know— legislative experience in politics.

  •  Then again, many more point out… why would Oprah need to run for president? Her influence is IMMENSE. Frankly, in my humble little opinion, if Oprah would suddenly start talking about Medicare for All or whatnot, there is a good chance those ideas could actually pass. Talk about Medicare for all, Oprah! Yass!
