Al Franken Resigns From Senate

  • Al Franken, once a rising star in the Democratic Party, has resigned after being accused by eight women of sexual harassment. Most notably, by Leeann Tweeden, a radio show host who revealed a photo of Al Franken touching her breasts without consent while she was asleep during a USO tour. Al Franken has been receiving pressure to resign from the Senate, and today has done so in a speech on the Senate floor. In his statement, the transcript of which can be read here, Franken denies all allegations of misconduct (or says they are a situation he remembers differently) and calls serving the United States Senate the greatest honor of his life. One quote has been receiving a lot of attention from the transcript, and it is worth repeating here — I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office, and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party. Indeed, while the Democrats have swiftly rid themselves of sexual harassers, the Republicans continue to support their own — from a man who himself admitted to sexual assault to an accused serial child predator in Roy Moore, who is running for Senator of Alabama. What do you think of the resignation of Al Franken?
