So Is “Die Hard” a Christmas Movie or Not?

  •  As December kicks off, the holiday season is in full swing. It’s a time when people celebrate with egg nog, Christmas carols, and… Die Hard? Seriously? Yes, there are a lot of people who celebrate their Christmas with an annual viewing of the 1988 action movie starring Bruce Willis. If you haven’t seen it, or any other Bruce Willis movie, it’s about a New York cop saving his ex-wife from terrorists who have taken over a high-rise office tower in Los Angeles. And this all happens during Christmastime, so that makes it a Christmas movie? Maybe. People on Twitter certainly seem to think so. Die Hard even became a children’s Christmas book! The book, titled “A Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic,” was released in October 2017. I hate to break it to all you Bruno fans out there, but Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. If your only metric is that part of the story happens at Christmas, then get ready for a whole lot more Christmas movies. Statistics website FiveThirtyEight created a list of the best movies that, according to IMDB, feature Christmas to some extent. If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, then so is The Godfather, Carol, Goodfellas, Eastern Promises, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and Kramer Vs. Kramer. Plus, Die Hard premiered in July, nowhere near the holiday season. If it came out on Thanksgiving, then maybe… MAYBE! But, this is a free country! Celebrate your holidays the way you want! So, what is the verdict? Is it a Christmas movie or not? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
