Grammy Best Album Category Has No White Men For First Time in 19 Years
For the first time in nineteen years the Grammys’ best album category, there have been no white men nominated. The nominees are “Awaken my Love” by Childish Gambino, ‘Melodrama’ by Lorde, ‘4:44’ by Jay-Z, ‘Damn’ by Kendrick Lamar, and ‘24K Magic’ by Bruno Mars. Also of note: all these albums are really really great. Has that ever happened before? Redbone was one of the best songs of the year, and “Damn”? What is that a title, or the reaction I have to hearing the songs from it?? Yeah, we make the jokes, here. Other notable nominations include R+B artist Khalid — whose reaction to being nominated for a Grammy was adorably chronicled by him on Twitter in absolutely the best way—

Wonderful. In any case, this is incredible progress in an era where many forces are trying to keep them down. But as importantly– these five albums are incredible! It’s the one time I could look at the five best album nominations and went “yes, none of these are meaningless trash pop”. Ugh, I forgot about “Story of O.J.”. Yeah, this is a great list. But what do you think? Anyone the nominations missed? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending. Also remember when Childish Gambino’s Redbone was used to start the shortly lived Chuck E. Cheese challenge? I didn’t forget, I loved it! Check it out here!
