A new Miss Universe was crowned Sunday night in Las Vegas — Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, Miss South Africa. Honored alongside Nel-Peters were first runner-up Miss Colombia Laura González and second runner-up Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett. Born in Sedgefield, Western Cape, Nel-Peters is now the second Miss Universe contestant from South Africa to be crowned — following Margaret Gardiner (1978). Only 22-years-old, Nel-Peters already has many accomplishments to her name. She recently earned her degree in business management at North-West University, and is giving back to her community. After being held at gunpoint, Nel-Peters made it a point to train women in self-defense — something she has, now, become very passionate about. During the Q&A portion of the competition, the newly crowned Miss Universe was asked what she thought was the most important issue regarding women in the workplace. She said — blockquote>In some places, women get paid $75 of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours — and I do not believe that this is right. I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world. Though many on Twitter were pleased with the results, others were shocked at the placement of Miss Jamaica.
