K-Pop Group BTS Takes America by Storm — But Who Are They?

  •  After an incredible performance at the 2017 American Music Awards, the K-pop boyband BTS has officially taken America by storm. BTS rocked the house at the AMA’s with a performance of their song DNA.  BTS is the first K-pop band to ever perform at the AMAs. They not only received a standing ovation, but they created many new K-pop converts on social media.

  •  There was a LOT of hype around BTS’s performance…  According to Good Morning America, there were over 20 Million tweets about BTS during the AMAs performance. In the group’s home of South Korea, news shows are running headlines such as “BTS writes history” , “Being worldwide superstar is an understatement” and “BTS Captures U.S audience” So, what do we know about BTS? BTS is was originally an acronym for the Korean term “Bangtan Sonyeondan,”  which translates to “bulletproof boy scouts” in English. But in July 2017, BTS freaked out fans by changing their name to the more English-friendly “Beyond The Scene.” Each of the seven members of BTS go by nicknames. There’s Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V, Jungkook, and Rap Monster. Rap Monster, also known as Kim Nam-joon, is the frontman for BTS. BTS have been taking over social media for the past few years. In June 2017, Time named BTS one of the most influential groups on the internet, spending 27 weeks in a row at the top of Billboard’s Social 50 chart, monitoring popularity across social media. BTS’s following is huge! The boy band has almost 10 million followers across Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. In May 2017, BTS won the Social Award at the Billboard Music Awards after fans posted and tweeted millions of times to vote for them. They use their social media platform to promote progressive ideas. People.com reports BTS’ songs often feature “a strong message — often pushing back on the social norms of conservative society.” The group sings about everything from bullying, mental health, the pursuit of happiness, and even female empowerment.” In 2016, they had the highest-charting K-pop album ever. In October 2016, BTS album “Wings” debuted at number 26 on the Billboard Top 200. In just four years, BTS has made a lot of music. BTS have 2 albums in Korean, 2 in Japanese, and many EPs in their back catalog. But if you are waiting for a BTS album in English, keep waiting. BTS has no current plans to even tour in the USA, but they have recently played to sold out crowds in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. Are you a new K-pop convert or are you already a die-hard fan of BTS?
