Rapper Lil Peep Dead at 21
Rapper Lil Peep died Wednesday night (November 15th) in Tucson, Arizona at the age of 21. Detectives of the Tucson Police Department found evidence suggesting the rapper died of a Xanax overdose. The tragic news was initially shared by his manager, Chase Ortega. Ortega tweeted, “I’ve been expecting this call for a year. Mother fuck.” His account has since been made private. Lil Peep’s death was then confirmed by Sarah Stennett of First Access Entertainment. Stennett said, “I do not believe Peep wanted to die. He had big goals and dreams for the future which he had shared with me, his team, his family and his friends. He was highly intelligent, hugely creative, massively charismatic, gentle and charming. He had huge ambition and his career was flourishing.” Born Gustav Åhr on November 1, 1996, Lil Peep was raised in Long Beach, New York. After dropping out of high school, Peep received his diploma through online computer courses, and quickly started pursuing music. “I moved out here [Los Angeles] straight out of high school thinking I was going to pay rent with this SoundCloud rap career I had going on,” Lil Peep told Pitchfork. “But it turned out I couldn’t really do that yet. So I had to go back [to Long Island].” When Lil Peep returned to Los Angeles, he created some of his best work, releasing several mixtapes and, eventually, his debut album — Come Over When You’re Sober (2017). Peep was described as “a young artist reviving emo for the hip-hop age,” and will be missed by many.
