James Corden and ‘Stranger Things’ Kids Perform in Motown Group, ‘The Upside Downs’

  •  Fun fact: Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, and Noah Schnapp have a musical past. Before Stranger Things, the boys were in a Motown group — The Upside Downs — with none other than, James Corden. But, how did the group get together?  “People thought it was weird that James hung out with us because he was an adult, but we actually went to school with him. He was held back a couple of years, but we’re in the same grade,” said Wolfhard.  “The boys and I, we have so much in common. We love playing video games, we all like taking naps, most importantly, we all love Motown,” Corden said. “We sold out a retirement home for old folks and we killed. We killed, literally.”  So, how did Stranger Things come about? At one of the group’s gigs, the boys were approached to audition for the Netflix show. One by one, the boys found out they had landed their respective roles, except for James — Millie Bobby Brown had beat him out for the part of Eleven.

  •  “I’ll be fine as long as I don’t end up wearing a suit and sitting behind a desk,” joked Corden. And yet… that’s exactly what he ended up doing. But, hey! At least he has Carpool Karaoke going for him.  Though the rest of the boys went on to see great success with Stranger Things, McLaughlin felt as though, “That band was still the most creatively fulfilling thing [he’d] ever been a part of.” So, for one night only, The Upside Downs decided to get back together and perform on The Late Late Show!
