Singer Selena Quintanilla Honored in Google Doodle

On Tuesday, October 17th, Google launched a Doodle honoring the life of Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla. It’s been over 20 years since the singer’s tragic passing, and it seems as though her light is shining brighter than ever. In recent years, Quintanilla has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a wax figure at Madam Tussauds, and a collaboration with MAC Cosmetics. Google planned the launch of this Doodle perfectly as it falls on the anniversary of Quintanilla’s first studio album, “Selena.” 28 years later, and her music is still so much fun to listen to. The Doodle is set to Selena’s hit, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Reminiscent of the movie, Selena that debuted in 1997, the illustration shows Quintanilla singing at home as a young girl. Before you know it, father Abraham Quintanilla is rounding up all the kids — A.B., Suzette, Selena — and Selena y Los Dinos are born. The brief video continues, showing their journey from performing at restaurants, to weddings, and finally — center stage at the Houston Astrodome. Just a couple days ago, Selena’s sister — Suzette Quintanilla — hinted at the Doodle via Instagram, saying “something [was] brewing” at Google San Francisco. To celebrate, Suzette did “a special chat on Selena’s life, her powerful legacy, and the family’s thoughts on the Doodle.” You can watch her #TalksAtGoogle segment below.
What do you think of the Doodle? As a big Selena Quintanilla fan, it nearly brought tears to my eyes to see her honored in such a special way. Leave your favorite Selena song in the comments or tweet us at @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
