Cardi B Taking Music World By Storm

  •  Rap artist Cardi B has made history by becoming the first female rapper in 19 years to top the charts. Move aside Taylor Swift, there is a new queen in town!  Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” beat out Taylor’s song “Look What You Made Me Do” claiming the number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week! The last time a female rapper topped the chart was in 1998, when Lauryn Hill made history with her song Doo Wop (That Thing.) With the success of “Bodak Yellow” Cardi B is not only a chart topper, she is now one of only five female rappers to ever claim a number that number 1 spot. But who is Cardi B? Where did she come from, and how exactly has she made it to the top so quickly? Belcalis Almazar, otherwise known as Cardi B, was born on October 11th 1992 in the Bronx, in New York City. At a young age, Cardi B became a stripper, and in an interview shot in January of 2016, she surprisingly explained how the money she made from stripping enabled her to support herself, which ultimately saved her life. In 2013 Cardi B started posting videos of herself to Instagram and Vine, and quickly gained a following because to put it simple.. the chick is brutally honest, has no filter and is downright hilarious. Just a couple of years later, Cardi B took on her role as a social media influencer full time, which enabled her to quit her job as a stripper.  Her Instagram fame and sassy attitude caught the attention of producers for the docu-series,  Love & Hip-Hop: New York, and after being placed as a cast member on the show, her following and fame far outgrew that of the show itself. Despite the skepticism, she released her debut single during her first season on Love and Hip-Hop, called “Cheap Ass Weave”,  a remake of “Queen’s Speech Ep4 (Brush Your Teeth) by Lady Leshurr, which was surprisingly well received.., and Cardi B’s rapping career was born. After the release of both her mixtapes Gangster Bitch 1 and 2, she rode the wave of praise…which led her to sign with Atlantic records and release her debut single called ‘Bodak Yellow.”  What do you think about Cardi B?
