Hurricane Irma Looters Caught On Camera By Local News

Looters robbing a sporting goods store were caught on camera by local news reporters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and later arrested by police. 6 million people were ordered to evacuate the state of Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma. Irma made landfall in Florida on Sunday, working its way up Florida’s west coast. As the storm left the Miami area, local news crews were on the street to survey the damage. One reporter happened to catch some looters on camera. WPLG in Fort Lauderdale caught about eight people looting a Simon’s Sporting Goods store. Police are looking at the footage to identify suspects. Looting is taken very seriously by Florida police. The Broward County Sheriff’s Department tweeted directly to the looters, saying “ATTENTION LOOTERS; Every incident will be investigated. Evidence collected will be used to pursue charges after the fact”, and the Ft. Lauderdale police tweeted out a pair mugshots of two suspected looters, with the caption “Can’t say we didn’t warn you…” In fact, two looters in Orlando, Florida, had a standoff with the SWAT team. Two men broke into an Academy Sports sporting goods store, reportedly to steal firearms. One man gave himself up after a stand-off, while the other was arrested after being tear-gassed. Orlando Police tweeted, “Burglary call at sporting goods store has been peacefully resolved. Two suspects in custody. No officers hurt:” Police are avoiding calling isolated burglaries looting. Orlando PD addresses the media, saying, “Reports of looting are inaccurate & unnecessarily put our community on edge. Please refrain from erroneous reporting at this time.” In Miami, police worked through the night to catch looters. [Early Monday morning, Miami-Dade Police tweeted, “28 arrests so far for burglary/looting. Our officers remain on patrol and the curfew is in effect until 7am.” A 17-year-old was also shot by Miami police during a hurricane-related burglary. According to NBC News Miami, two teens were caught on a home surveillance system. A Broward County Sheriff’s deputy opened fire on the teenagers.
