Taylor Swift premiered the music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” at the 2017 Video Music Awards, and some fans believe they have spotted hidden messages. “Look What You Made Me Do” seems to be filled with references to Taylor’s famous feuds, her love life, and more. The video begins with a zombie Taylor crawling out of her grave, covered in dirt. It seems to be a reference to the music video for “Out of the Woods,” which was the last song on Taylor’s last album “1989.” At this end of the graveyard sequence, we see Taylor at the bottom of a grave wearing the same dress she wore to the 2014 Met Gala. It can be seen as picking up where the last album left off, but now things are much different. There are many references to the 2009 VMA’s, when everything changed. At the end of the video, among all the different versions of Taylor, there’s a version of her from the 2009 VMA’s saying, “I’d like to be excluded from this narrative.” Taylor made a similar comment regarding the controversy that began when Kanye West interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video. That moment began a feud between the two artists that never seems to get settled. Kanye reopened the feud when he included Taylor in the music video for his song famous, including the lyric “”I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.” Kanye claims he got permission from Taylor to use that line, which Taylor’s camp denied. Taylor opens her new video with the lyrics “I don’t like your little games / Don’t like your tilted stage / The role you made me play / Of the fool / No, I don’t like you” An obvious jab at Kanye West’s suspended stage from his Saint Pablo Tour. Speaking of celebrity feuds, Taylor also takes a swipe at long-time frenemy Katy Perry. Taylor, sporting a look very similar to Katy Perry’s, caresses a Grammy award. Many people think Taylor is throwing shade at Katy because Katy Perry has never won a Grammy, while Taylor has won 10. Taylor made references to her battles with streaming music services. One segment of the music video shows Taylor and friends robbing the vault of a company named Stream Co. Taylor removed her music from Apple Music over a royalties dispute. Taylor also pokes fun at herself. Taylor portrays herself as the powerful leader of a group of pretty robots, playing with the public perception that her squad all look the same and are easily replaced. Taylor does make another reference to her girl squad later in the video Taylor’s t-shirt from the video for “You Belong With Me” gets an update for 2017. In “Look What You Made Me Do,” the names have been changed to reflect Taylor’s new squad. There are also a few references to Taylor’s love life in the video. In one sequence, there are 8 back-up dancers, thought to represent 8 of Taylor’s famous ex-lovers, each wearing an “I Heart T S” croptop. Taylor’s ex Tom Hiddleston, was spotting wearing a similar tanktop during Taylor’s big Fourth of July party on the coast of Rhode Island. There are also thought to be a few references to Taylor’s ex Calvin Harris. In the graveyard, there is a tombstone for Nils Sjöberg, which was the pseudonym Swift used when co-writing “This Is What You Came For” with Calvin Harris. Taylor even dresses up as Harris in the segment of the music video where she cuts the wings off a jet with a chainsaw. There is even a reference to Taylor’s recent sexual assault trial. This year, Taylor Swift appeared in court in a sexual assault case. She was being countersued by a radio DJ who claimed that he lost his job because Taylor Swift spoke up about the DJ grabbing her butt during a photo op. At the end of the trial, the jury awarded Taylor Swift $1 as a symbolic victory. That dollar can be seen next to Taylor’s shoulder while she’s sitting in the tub of jewelry.
