Watch Durham Protesters Destroy This Confederate Statue

  •  The horrifying and objectively revolting white power rallies in Charlottesville this weekend that resulted in the death of Heather Heyer was originally, or so the nazis say, over the potential removal of a statue of Confederate Robert E. Lee. The rallies and protests against the rallies have begun a national discussion about white supremacists and nazis that included what the representation of these statues still meant. With this backdrop of unfolding history, protesters in Durham, North Carolina have toppled a statue honoring confederate soldiers.  The photo of the statue being toppled has become iconic, and the photo — captioned — has become a popular meme on the internet — along with people pretending completely meaningless statues mean things to them. Here are some of the best Tweets on the discussion.

  •  The discussion on wether or not it’s right or wrong to tear down these monuments has gone on for a while — with those on one side claiming that to tear them down is to erase history, while those on the other side claiming that the continued use of them is honoring white supremacy. I don’t know if you can erase history, and the statue emboldens and celebrates a vision of America that supported slavery. To get rid of them is to send the message — we do not support that vision. It’s inspiring to see them be torn down for that reason.  What do you think of the statue tear down? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
