Babysitters Trap Baby in Fridge for Snapchat

Two teen babysitters were arrested Tuesday after they posted Snapchat videos of them putting a 7-month-old baby inside of a refrigerator. In Danvers, Massachusetts on Monday evening, two teenagers were watching a 7-month-old baby while it’s mother was in the shower. In the first video they posted to Snapchat, it shows the two girls — one being the baby’s cousin — putting the baby on a shelf of the fridge, closing the door, and laughing as the baby screams. The next Snapchat video shows them laughing again and opening the fridge to reveal the screaming child. Police are unsure how long the baby was in the fridge, but say that no injuries were reported. The two babysitters were arrested and charged with assault, child endangerment, and battery with a dangerous weapon after the video was reported to the Department of Children and Families. The child’s mother, Bonnie, said she was horrified when she saw the videos. “I’m traumatized from that. I don’t want anyone near my child anymore.” She continued, “I know she wouldn’t hurt my daughter and that wasn’t her intentions. I think it was all foolishness, stupidity. I will no longer be leaving my children with my niece or her friends again ever in my life.” Unfortunately, there has been an influx in stories of young people documenting mindless things for the purpose of social media. We’re not even sure that these girls knew the seriousness of their actions as they were happening, but there is something to be said about wanting to document distress and think it’s humorous in any way. How do you think we can learn from these behaviors? Is there a way to stop these crimes via social media? Let us know in the comments or at @WhatsTrending on Twitter.
